Profitability of ports: determinants and financial data

Abstract

This paper presents a research and assessment regarding the profitability of port authorities and listed companies that operate ports among the top 100 ports, based on the Lloyds list regarding world port rankings. This thesis has a time frame of 10 years (2010 until 2019). The rankings that are mentioned on the paper are related entirely with the containerized trade, since the ranking that this thesis is based on, has to do with the annual twenty-foot equivalent (TEU) throughput of ports. There was a presentation of the basic descriptive statistics that were used and a reporting of any trend (if there was any) occurred during the examined period. As a result of the conducted research, it is presented that Return on Assets, and consequently profitability, is significantly depicted from the disaggregate model rather than the aggregate model. Additionally, there was no linear correlation between R.O.A. and the variables used. Only one from the models that were used provided a favourable clarification regarding the fluctuations of R.O.A. and is the only model that can be utilized.

Η συγκεκριμένη έρευνα αφορά την κερδοφορία λιμενικών αρχών και εταιριών εισηγμένων σε χρηματιστήριο που δραστηριοποιούνται σε λιμάνια ανάμεσα στα κορυφαία 100 του κόσμου, βάσει της λίστας της Lloyds που αφορά την κατάταξη των λιμανιών παγκοσμίως. Το χρονικό διάστημα που τοποθετείται η έρευνα αφορά την δεκαετία 2010-2019. Οι θέση που λαμβάνει κάθε λιμάνι στην συγκεκριμένη λίστα γίνεται με βάση το εμπόριο εμπορευματοκιβωτίων, μιας και η κατάταξη στην οποία βασίστηκε αυτή η έρευνα σχετίζεται με την ετήσια διακίνηση εμπορευματοκιβωτίων είκοσι μέτρων. Έγινε παρουσίαση των βασικών στατιστικών δεδομένων που χρησιμοποιήθηκαν, και η όποια τάση παρατηρήθηκε κατά την συγκεκριμένη περίοδο. Το συμπέρασμα αυτής της έρευνας ήταν ότι η απόδοση του ενεργητικού (Return on Assets), εξηγείται από μεταβλητές που είναι πιο εξειδικευμένες σε σχέση με τις γενικότερες. Επιπλέον δεν παρατηρήθηκε γραμμική σχέση μεταξύ κερδοφορίας και μεταβλητών που χρησιμοποιήθηκαν.
