Abstract :Financial institutions are important parts of modern economies and the international markets. The activities and the transactions among the financial institutions are of great concern. Thisthesis investigated the merger and acquisition activities in the banking industry. It examined ifthese activities affect the share price and the shareholders’ wealth of the involved financialinstitutions. The case study of the Eurobank Ergasias acquiring the TT Hellenic Postbank andthe Proton Bank in 2013 was taken into closer examination. The event study methodology wasconducted for the purpose of this analysis. The thesis also investigated if the merger andacquisition activities affect the performance and the value of the financial institutions. For thepurpose of the second analysis, a comparative analysis of the financial ratios of the mergedEurobank Ergasias and the non-merged Attica Bank was utilized, among the years 2012 and2014. The financial and the market value analysis were conducted as well. Considering thesecond part of the analysis, we enrich the -already existed- literature review, by thecomparison of the financial ratios of the merged financial institutions and the non-mergedfinancial institutions, during the second merger and acquisitions wave of the Greek bankingindustry. The outcomes of this thesis show a non-important and statistically significant effect of themergers and acquisition activities on the share price, on the performance, and on the value ofthe financial organizations. The outcomes of this thesis could be important to the investors, tothe shareholders, and to the board of directors of the financial organizations for future reviewand strategy consultation.
