Τεκμήριο Design and impact assessment of green information systems: the case of energy and carbon management systems in the supply chain(2015) Zampou, Eleni; Athens University of Economics and Business, Department of Management Science and Technology; Doukidis, Georgios; Mourtos, Yiannis; Minis, Ioannis; Manthou, Vasiliki; Tarantilis, Christos D.; Lekakos, Geogrios; Pramatari, AikateriniIn response to the mounting request for sustainable supply chains, companies need to trace, manage and assess their energy and carbon emissions by incorporating a life cycle perspective. Recent studies within the field of Information Systems (IS) argue that information systems can forge supply chain sustainability by supporting energy and carbon management. Mindful of this potential, a new class of information systems emerges, the Energy and Carbon Management Systems (ECMS). In this thesis, we focus on such systems and aim to address the challenge of designing and implementing them, hence proposing a design theory for ECMS. We have worked towards such a theory while designing information systems for supporting the energy and carbon management in the supply chain for four different organizations. That is, this thesis adopts a design science approach to define the scope of energy and carbon management, capture the industrial and informational requirements of ECMS in the supply chain context, identify a series of design principles, and derive a conceptual architecture that includes all the basic constructs that comprise such systems. Deploying and demonstrating our ECMS artifact in different settings, yields sufficient evidence about the implementation challenges that affect their design and their “in-field” impact on the implementation of environmentally-sustainable supply chains.
