Τhe purpose of the present dissertation is to study the behavior of the firms when there exist incentives for innovation. Additionally, it aims to discuss how these incentives and the total welfare are affected by the presence of patents. This discussion takes place in the presence of spillover effects. At first, I present a literature review which includes both theoretical models of innovation and optimal patent policy. It also includes empirical literature on the patent policy. Then, I develop my own model of product innovation. I present Cournot and Bertrand equilibria and I compare them through numerical simulations. I proceed on a discussion about the optimal patent policy afterwards. Finally, I present an extension of my main model.
