The use of choice architecture tools in sustainable tourism: a systematic literature review

In this systematic literature review we are going to examine whether the six tools of choice architecture can be used, and have the desired effect, to implement sustainability in tourism. Since tourism is an active sector of human economic activity and even though there are various studies in the field, that consist of primary data, they are scattered and should be collected into one review. This systematic literature review consists of studies that examine the relationship among choice architecture tools, sustainability and tourism, and their results come from the primary data they collected. The compilation of studies was exhaustive, and no relevant study was ignored. Literature consists of three specific pillars, tools of choice architecture, sustainability and tourism sector. Next, comes the Methodology. This chapter describes step by step the procedure that was followed to create this systematic literature review. Briefly this chapter is about the research approach, the building of the research question, the literature search strategy and the inclusion and exclusion criteria that were implemented. The two final chapters are the most entertaining ones, due to the original work that they contain. The Results chapter, where we get to see analyzed in a collective way the results of the 72 studies of the literature. Results are categorized in six parts, by tool of choice architecture. Every part is analyzed separately and mixed with other ones, to present the results extensively. The final chapter of the systematic literature review is the one with the most original work, the Conclusions. The results are being interpreted into conclusions, that wrap up our knowledge on the studied concept. Afterwards, the author argues about the contribution of this systematic literature review to the academic research and about the managerial and societal implications of the review’s findings. Finally, propositions for future research are made.
