Οι παράγοντες επηρεασμού που εξετάστηκαν είναι η δυνατότητα της επιχείρησης να αφουγκράζεται την αγορά και το τεχνολογικό γίγνεσθαι (market and technology sensing capabilities), η οργανωσιακή απομάθηση (organizational unlearning) και η διάθεση της επιχείρησης για κανιβαλισμό (willingness to cannibalize).
Despite the extensive research attention to the development of new products and the considerable attention to the elimination of existing ones, the combinatorial decision involving the transition from the old to the new version of a multi-generational product (i.e., a product rollover) remains understudied, especially from a marketing angle. Following a review of research on product elimination, innovation and new product launch, and product rollovers, this thesis examines product rollover decisions from a marketing perspective. Drawing on the theories of outside-in capabilities, adaptative capabilities and dynamic capabilities, this dissertation develops three conceptual frameworks. These frameworks are empirically tested in a cross-sectoral sample of 179 rollover decisions among UK-based manufacturers of multi-generational products. The results of Model 1 reveal that market and technology sensing capabilities are instrumental in conducting creative product rollovers. Furthermore, there is an optimal level of product rollover creativity (PRC), which yields the highest market performance of the product rollover. Model 1 uncovers two curvilinear indirect effects: a) of market sensing capability on market performance through PRC and b) of technology sensing capability on market performance through PRC for low and medium levels of technology sensing capability. Model 2 identifies that a) organizational unlearning is indirectly related to rollover performance through the improvement in product rollover modifications (PRMs) and b) environmental dynamism has a moderating role in the relationship between organizational unlearning and the improvement in PRMs. Model 3 demonstrates that a) willingness to cannibalize (WTC) positively influences PRC, b) PRC has a positive impact on the improvement in PRMs, c) the improvement in PRMs has a positive effect on product rollover performance, d) technological turbulence and munificence in the business environment moderate the association between WTC and PRC, e) WTC impacts product rollover performance through PRC, and f) PRC influences product rollover performance through the improvement in PRMs. The findings of these three studies yield significant theoretical and managerial implications. This thesis concludes with the limitations and suggestions for future research opportunities on product rollover research.
